Serving their famous French dipped sandwiches since 1951, Philippe The Original is a must visit not only for LA residents but for anyone visiting the city, too. The family claim to have invented the famous French dipped sandwich in 1908, in France, before importing the business to LA in the forties.
As the story goes, Mathieu – the founder of the family business – was serving a police officer a sandwich one day which he accidentally dropped into the juice of the meat. The police officer was still happy to take the sandwich, to avoid waste, and went on his way before returning with friends anxious to try out a new delicacy.
Still residing in their original location, and, still family owned and managed, Philippe’s restaurant has a unique atmosphere that promises to retain it’s original and authentic feel for every visit. Philippe offers LA a fast food option with a real difference.
The small restaurant offers authentic home-made breakfasts, as well as being well known for their soup and salad selections. For a taste of what made the family business so famous and successful, however, you must try one of their meat and ‘jus’ sandwiches.
The simple sandwich selection offers you carved beef, pork, lamb, ham, turkey, or pastrami. The sandwich is served on a light French brioche bread bun and dipped in fresh ‘jus’ made from the meat. For a small additional fee, you can also add some of their delicious in-house cheese, with American, Swiss, Jack, Cheddar, and Blue Cheese all available on request. And don’t forget to add some French mustard for a kick!
The venue is quirky and unique and offers all customers an unmissable atmosphere. Philippe the Original is definitely the most traditional and authentic place to eat in the area, and best of all, a meat sandwich can be picked up for just $7.
